Women to Watch

A BIENNIAL EXHIBITION SERIES DEDICATED TO SHOWCASING THE WORK OF UP-AND-COMING FEMALE ARTISTS

Women to Watch is an exhibition series held in Washington DC every two to three years designed to increase the visibility of female artists, giving them both greater international recognition and an opportunity to exhibit in a major museum in the United States.

Women to Watch is a collaboration between the museum and its national and international outreach committees. It features emerging and underrepresented artists from the United States and other countries in which the museum has committees. Each exhibition focuses on a specific theme or medium chosen by the museum’s curators. The committees consult with contemporary art curators in their respective regions to create shortlists of artists. NMWA’s curatorial team then selects artists for inclusion in the exhibition.

Since 2015, the Italian Committee has participated in Women to Watch in collaboration with the Museo del Novecento located in Milan. For each edition of Women to Watch, the Museo del Novecento has created a short list of emerging women artists for consideration in the exhibition. NMWA has then selected the artists to represent Italy and the Italian Committee has raised the funds needed to send the artwork selected for the exhibition to the museum.
